Growing up idealistic and naïve – surrounded by political turmoil of the Vietnam War – I had trouble reconciling our near-idolatry of generals who led prior generations into gallant wars with the disdain many of us showed toward soldiers returning from Southeast Asia.
This week, as we honor those who have protected our country in countless capacities, I’m humbled by the sacrifices of all those, including my father, who served, knowing my young adulthood fell within a long period of peace.
The older I grow, the more appreciative I become of freedoms we enjoy – thanks to the courage of our veterans.

So proud of our Army Dad, and of
our Mom who took care of the kids!
