Old $chool

by Jan Schroder

I found my first semester out-of-state tuition invoice from the University of Virginia. My father grumbled when he generously paid the $670 fee – what then seemed exorbitant. Tuition there today is $40,000, with $20,000 needed for fees/expenses.

The AJC reported Sunday Georgia public college students are paying 3- to 9-percent more for tuition this year. I’m fortunate I wrote my kids’ last tuition check nearly a decade ago.

Ultimately, online degrees – such as Georgia Tech’s – will disrupt costs. We can help individual students at crowdfunding sites. Or go old school as I do and donate to your favorite college fund.
