When George R. R. Martin put pen to paper for his fantasy series A Song of Ice and Fire, he had no idea that his sprawling epic would become the hit HBO show Game of Thrones.
Nor did he envision that writing about fictional direwolves in his world of Westeros would help him raise money to save real wolves on Earth.
The author’s crowdfunding campaign has raised close to $400,000 for the Wild Spirit Wolf Sanctuary, including $40,000 from two fans who paid to have a character named after them that will “meet a grisly death” in his next book.
