“Coming out” to family or to the public can be daunting for any gay person, but Cathy Woolard had to do both in one day.
Daughter and granddaughter of public servants, Cathy disagreed with the U.S. Supreme Court’s Hardwick decision, but believed in government. She played an integral role in what ultimately became a half-million person March on Washington, D.C.
Cathy went on to be Georgia’s first openly gay public official and the first woman Atlanta City Council president as well as an early BeltLine champion. Today, she’s involved with nonprofits and is married to her partner of 25 years.
