Last week, The Home Depot came under fire – and had to fire – its outside social media agency that posted what the Atlanta-based retailer called a “stupid and offensive” tweet on

HD’s Twitter account. HD quickly deleted the College GameDay tweet and issued nearly 100 apology tweets while marketing bloggers around the country took to their keyboards to complain the company was merely shooting the messenger and not taking proper blame.

Yet, HD did fire its internal manager and chivalrously shielded the name of the agency from the public.

Another lesson learned the hard way in our emerging 24-hour news cycle.
