“A house divided against itself cannot stand.” Whether you know this quote from the gospel of Matthew or from Abraham Lincoln’s senatorial campaign speech, it is a truth with broad application. It’s especially true in organizations.
Unity of purpose starts at the top of any organization. Those in governance, be they the owners or a board, must agree and commit to a mission and to goals. Only then can the management team formulate, communicate and execute a strategy to achieve them.
Without unity of purpose at the highest level, an organization is a house divided against itself. It cannot stand.
